Jonatan Christie took the silver medal at the 2026 HYLO Open after his run was ended by Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen in the final. In the match at Saarlandhalle in Saarbrucken, Germany, on Sunday, November 1, Jonatan lost in straight games, 17-21 and 10-21. The defeat prevented him from defending his title at the tournament.
Tight contest in the first game
According to ANTARA, Jonatan tried to take control of the match from the start by applying pressure and dictating the tempo. The two players remained evenly matched until the score reached 9-9.
The situation then changed when Jonatan made several unforced errors midway through the game. Lakshya Sen capitalized by scoring seven consecutive points and building an 18-10 lead. Jonatan managed to narrow the gap, but Sen played more consistently to close out the first game 21-17.
Losing control of the tempo
In the second game, Jonatan lost control of the tempo and fell four points behind. He tried to apply pressure again to create an opportunity for a comeback, but his attacks were repeatedly thwarted by Sen's solid defense.
Sen maintained his lead and gave Jonatan little room to develop his game. The Indian player eventually won the second game 21-10 to secure the 2026 HYLO Open title. Jonatan had to settle for finishing the tournament as runner-up.
Unable to defend the title
CNN Indonesia reported that Jonatan entered the 2026 HYLO Open as the defending champion. He was one of two Indonesian entries to reach the semifinals of the tournament, alongside the women's doubles pair of Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.
Unlike Jonatan, Tiwi and Fadia secured the top spot on the podium. They defeated the top-seeded Taiwanese pair Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Jhih Yun 21-18 and 21-19 in the final at the same venue. Indonesia therefore returned home with one title and one runner-up finish from the 2026 HYLO Open.
Indonesia's record on the European tour
The HYLO Open concluded a series of three BWF World Tour tournaments in Europe that also included the Denmark Open and French Open. Over those three weeks, Indonesia claimed two titles and two runner-up finishes.
The first title was delivered by Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri at the 2026 Denmark Open after they defeated Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the final. At the 2026 French Open, Moh Zaki Ubaidillah finished as runner-up after losing to Christo Popov in the title match.
The results achieved by Jonatan and Tiwi/Fadia at the HYLO Open completed the Indonesian contingent's European campaign. After the series concluded, several world-level badminton tournaments were scheduled to take place in Asia throughout November 2026, including the Korea Open, Kumamoto Masters, Hong Kong Open, and Syed Modi International.
