TIPS & GUIDES

A general guide to phone care and repair. For hardware damage, have your phone checked by a trusted technician.

Apps that close unexpectedly or force close usually cause the screen to return to the home screen, stop working during use, or display a notification that the app is not responding. Based on experience handling phones at a service counter, this issue does not always mean that a component is damaged. Troubleshooting should begin with the app, storage, and system before moving on to the hardware.

Identify the pattern of the issue

Pay attention to whether the problem occurs in only one app or in nearly all apps. If only one app is affected, the cause is more likely to be corrupted app data, an incomplete update, incorrect permissions, or an app version that is no longer compatible with the phone’s system.

If many apps close unexpectedly, the phone frequently freezes, or the device restarts on its own, storage that is too full and an unstable system should be considered. Also note when the issue first appeared, such as after a system update, the installation of a new app, a data transfer, or when the phone became very hot. These patterns can help a technician narrow down the diagnosis.

Common causes

Apps need free space to store temporary data. When storage is nearly full, data read and write operations can be disrupted, preventing apps from running properly. Having too many apps active in the background can also slow down the phone, especially when several apps are synchronizing or processing data at the same time.

Other causes include problematic cache files, corrupted app files, delayed app or system updates, and disabled essential permissions. In some cases, high phone temperatures cause performance to be limited, making demanding apps more likely to stop. Hardware issues are more likely to require investigation if force closes are accompanied by restarts, an inability to save files, a frozen screen, or errors that persist after the system has been properly restored.

Safe steps to try

Start by closing the app and restarting the phone. Check the available storage space and delete files that are no longer needed after making sure important data has been backed up. Avoid installing unverified cleaning apps, as they can add to the workload, display excessive advertisements, or change settings without providing any real benefit.

Update apps through the official app store and install available system updates once the battery has sufficient charge and the connection is stable. On Android, the cache of a problematic app can be cleared through the app settings without immediately deleting all its data. On iPhone, the app can be deleted and reinstalled if its important data has already been synchronized or backed up. Also make sure that required permissions, such as access to storage, the camera, the microphone, or location, are configured according to the app’s functions.

If the problem appears after installing a particular app, remove that app and observe whether the situation changes. Do not download installation files from unknown sources. A factory reset should be the last resort because all locally stored data may be erased. Only perform it after creating a backup and understanding which accounts will be required to reactivate the device.

When to ask a technician for an inspection

Take the phone to a technician if many apps continue to close unexpectedly, the device frequently restarts, the storage cannot read or save data, the phone becomes excessively hot without heavy use, or updates repeatedly fail. An inspection is also necessary if the problem appears after the phone has been dropped, exposed to liquid, or developed charging issues.

Before handing over the phone, back up any data that is still accessible and remove the memory card if it is not needed for the inspection. Explain the sequence of events and the steps that have already been tried. A good technician will first inspect the system and perform basic tests rather than immediately concluding that a component must be replaced.
