A general guide to phone care and repair. For hardware damage, have your phone checked by a trusted technician.
Fingerprint sensors allow phone owners to unlock the screen and access apps quickly. Problems usually become apparent when a finger is repeatedly rejected, the sensor responds slowly, or the fingerprint option disappears from the settings. Based on repair experience, troubleshooting should begin with cleanliness, finger condition, and software before component damage is suspected.
Identify the symptoms
A minor issue is usually indicated when the sensor still responds but works only when the finger is placed in certain positions. The phone may display a message asking the user to place the finger on the sensor again, while other previously registered fingerprints still work. This is often related to a dirty sensor surface, incorrect finger placement, or fingerprint data that has become difficult to recognize.
Also watch for symptoms that may indicate a more serious problem. For example, the sensor may not respond at all, the fingerprint registration menu may be unavailable, the registration process may always stop, or the problem may appear after the phone has been dropped, exposed to liquid, or had its screen replaced. Note when the problem began, as this information can help a technician narrow down the inspection.
Common causes of recognition failure
Sweat, oil, dust, and lotion residue can interfere with fingerprint pattern recognition. Skin that is too dry, peeling, injured, or wrinkled after exposure to water can also make the scanned pattern differ from the stored data. A screen protector that is dirty, too thick, unevenly installed, or unsuitable can interfere with an under-display sensor.
The problem may also come from the system. Biometric data may malfunction after settings are changed, a system update does not complete properly, or temporary storage encounters an error. If the phone has been struck or exposed to liquid, the sensor connection or module may be affected. On certain phones, replacing the screen or related components requires proper installation and calibration procedures for fingerprint recognition to return to normal.
Safe steps to try
Clean the sensor area with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Do not pour liquid directly onto the screen or into gaps around the sensor. Wash your hands if they are oily, then dry them completely. Place the part of the finger normally used flat against the sensor without applying excessive pressure. If you use a screen protector and the problem began after installation, check for bubbles, cracks, dirt, or uneven positioning around the sensor area.
Restart the phone, then check through the settings menu whether an official system update is available. If the sensor settings are still accessible, delete the problematic fingerprint data and register it again while the finger is clean. Record the finger from several angles using normal pressure. Before deleting biometric data, make sure you still remember the screen lock code or device password.
Avoid making repeated attempts within a short period, as the security system may temporarily disable biometric features. Do not press the sensor with an object, scrub it with abrasive materials, or heat the phone. If the device is suspected of having been exposed to liquid, turn it off if it is safe to do so, do not charge it, and promptly have it inspected by a technician.
When to request a technician's inspection
Take the phone to a technician if the sensor does not respond at all, the fingerprint menu disappears, new fingerprint registration always fails, or the problem begins after an impact, liquid exposure, or screen replacement. An inspection is needed to distinguish among software issues, screen protector interference, calibration problems, internal connection faults, and module damage.
Before handing over the device, back up important data if the phone is still usable. Enable an alternative lock method that you remember, and do not disclose passwords for personal accounts. Clearly explain the history of the problem, including whether it appeared suddenly or after a repair, so the diagnosis can be carried out without unnecessary trial and error.
